Asphalt shingles:Asphalt shingles is a type of piece or roof shingle, They are one of the most widely used in North America residential homes because they have a afordable price and are fairly simple to install,  Most of the new Jersey roof have Asphalt shingles due to durability and with many color options making the asphalt roofing shingles the number one choice for many residents in New Jersey,

depending on the roofing manufacture asphalt roof shingles can last many years that start from 15 to 30 years and lifetime roofing shingles [ in the last case you have to

read you roofing manufacture limitations]

Roofing wood shakes & roofing wood shingles: The most popular roofing wood shakes are Cedar shakes and redwood roofing shakes, wood shingles are cut with a machine and wood roofing shakes are all hand crafted and have a unique rougher look, when installing wood shakes or wood shingles you have to pay close

attention to all details  during installation process.

looking and almost free maintenance.

How to install residential roofing / roofing process in New Jersey

Whether you as home owner or you want to hire a roofing contractor the the roofing process is the same, It all starts with selecting the roofing brand and style,

after that you have file your roofing permit in NJ building department, depending how busy they are most of the roof permits will take one week up to 3 weeks

roofing tear off is our next step so is time to cover areas where roofing debris will fall on such as driveway, steps, railing, Plants, Deck, and any area that may be affect by the

roofing tear, So now that we have all covered it's time for roofing tear off if you are doing the work your self you may want to use roofing harness,

After completing the roof tear off depending on what you roof decking is you may have to re nail the decking using 2" Framing nails

okay now that we have secure the deck properly is time to blow all debris from your roof deck and our next step will be to install the ice and water shield leak barrier & roof deck underlayment, there are many roofing underlayment the most common is felt paper, for best protection against water damage on exterior sheeting we always recommend to install aluminum drip edge and it will also give a great looking to all roof gables, After that is time for your new asphalt shingles installation, there are many roofing brands and styles

so make sure you follow all manufactures recommendations, Another important step is to make sure you have all proper flashing at dormers, Chimney, Walls and pipe vents.

When is the right time during the year to install my new roof in New Jersey?

when it come's to when is the right time for a new roof installation i will tell this, The right time is while the weather is still warm so let say any time from February until December

of course if by December we have snow obviously we shouldn't install any asphalt shingles unless you have an emergency, And here is why we recommend not to install asphalt

shingles in the winter no just because the snow but because asphalt shingles have adhesive that it will only bond when temperatures are above 40 degrees making your roof wind

proof, other wise if you install asphalt shingles during those months that we don't recommend be aware that if we get strong winds you may loose roof shingles and you will have

a potential water damage in you home that can be very expensive to repair and a high chance for mold to start growing.

How many years my roof will last?

A properly roof shingles installation it will last the years of what your roof is suppose to last, there are roofing manufactures that claim their shingles will last 15 to 30 years

but again they will last that long only if you have performed a properly roofing installation that starts with the underlayment, Proper shingles installation, proper flashing installation, and properly air circulation, Not following these steps your roof will be be compromise and will not only last what is suppose to last but it also your warranty from the manufacture will be voided.

common roofing problems in New Jersey:

Most of the roof problems are caused by not having a properly flashing installation, causing water leaks into you home,

Air circulation is another mistake that many roofing contractors make and when that happens your roof will not last the years your roof is suppose to last

your attic will over heat and you roof deck will dry to much and your shingles will start to buckling, And when that happen the nail heads will start popping out because the plywood will loose strength and  because of that your manufacturer warranty will be voided.

What a fascia board is?

Fascia board is a board that is attach to the end of the rafters at all roof eave and also use on gavel walls, their size vary depending on each design, most of the fascia boards are approximately 1x6" After the fascia board installation is very common to wrap the fascia board with aluminum coil to give it a smooth beautiful finish and at the same time it will protect the wood from been expose to the exterior weather.

Roof rafters size and spacing:

Roof rafters are the wood that give the shape of your roof and the sizes vary from 2x6 to 2x12" and 16" on center, We have install install many roofs in  NJ and we have seen some roof that have 2x6 & 24" on center making the roof decking wavy and unsuitable to the eye.

Ice and water shield leak barrier: Ice and water shield is installed at all roof eave, dormers, valleys, Skylights and around pipe flanges

Ice and water shield is as important as you shingles it self because without ice and water shield your roof will have a very high risk of water leaking.

Roofing felt paper / Deck Armor premium breathable Underlayment:

Felt paper is one of the most common roof deck underlayment but now with new technology in the roofing industry GAF has a new roof deck underlayment the Armor Deck protection, The Armor deck protection from GAF is made thinking in the life of your roof because it breathe.. to allow moisture from inside you attic to scape keeping you attic moisture free.

Ridge vent:

Ridge vent is a air circulation system that keep you attic space dry and mold free and at the same time extend to the max the life of your asphalt shingles,  As a roofer we strongly believe that every roof in New Jersey should have a ridge vent or some kind of roof ventilation.

Pipe flange / pipe boot:

Pipe flange or pipe boot is a aluminum / plastic with rubber water tight and is use on any pipe coming out of the roof, but if you don't like the aluminum or black plastic color you can always buy them in a color that will match your roofing shingles, I have seen many new roof with old pipe flange

witch it make no sense, How can you not replace a 20 years old pipe flange when you are installing a new roof?

If you are looking to replace you roofing pipe flange in  New Jersey.         Contact us for a free Estimate.

Roof drip edge: Roof drip edge is very essential for the lifetime of your roof, Drip edge is a L shape aluminum trim and it come's in different colors ans sizes that can vary from 2x2 to 2x3 or you can always build your own, Drip edge gets install an roof eave and at the wall rake - fascia board, Drip edge.

Roof starter strip shingles: The roof starter is a very simple step to fallow yet many roofing contractors will fail to install them, Roof starters get install at all roof edges and their purpose is to reinforce all roof edges from strong winds and at the same time it will give to all roof edges a clean & neat look, Without the roof starters your roof have a greater chance of roofing shingles to start lifting or bending at the roof edges.

Roof cement application: One of the most common roof cements brands is Karnak roofcement and roof sealer, Roof cement sealer is use in many areas such as pipe flange / pipe boots, around chimney, and in commercial Building is very common to be use at the drip edge of course any time you use cement roof you have to use roof menbrane to reinforce the area where you applied roof cement.

Attic fan / ventilation: There are a few roof ventilation systems but the most common are cobra ridge vent and attic electric fan with thermostat, The cobra ridge vent gets install at the ridge vent but before you install the cobra ridge vent you have to make a cut on the roof sheeting approx. 2" on each side to let the air pass thru the cobra ridge vent, When you install cobra ridge vent you want to make sure that you also have some kind of soffit ventilation, Electric attic fan is install o the roof by cutting a round opening thru the roof sheeting then you have to make sure you have electric power for the fan, Is always better to install a attic fan that have a thermostat, when you install a attic fan with thermostat we always recommend to set the temperature to 90 fahrenheit,

Ventilation consist of both air intake from soffit vents and exhaust air thru roof ridge vent, without enough ventilation the attic will be unbreathable hot during the summer reducing the life of you roof deck and roof shingles, the heat in your attic can contribute to rot your roof deck, a combination of insufficient ventilation and insulation can produce ice dams and interior water damage, In many cases not enough roof ventilation can void your roof shingles warranty, Is always recommend to calculate your attic space for a properly roof ventilation

Mold in my attic space: Mold in the attic space is very common and that's why every time we install a new roof in New Jersey we always recommend to install a roof ventilation system, Cold winters are very suitable for mold to grow in your attic due to the heat from your heating system and the coldness been in your attic it will create condensation and a high chance for mold to grow, Mold can affect you roof rafters, sheeting, insulation and whatever is in the way.

Gutters & leaders: Yankee gutter is one of the old gutters system that basically is a channel for the water to run into the leaders, now days all residential and commercial gutters are made from heavy duty aluminum, making an easy to  installation and providing a beautiful rich look to your house, If you as a home owner want to install gutters and leaders fallow this steps, avoid seams as much as possible make sure to pitch the gutter towards the leader, Attach one gutter brackets every 3 feet from each other and from 6 to 12 inches at the ends, when installing new gutters make sure your fascia board is sound for proper installation, make sure not to drive the screw to deep into the fascia board other wise the edge of you gutter it will look wavy, for the leader installation you will new a metal hole saw or a drill and a metal snip cutter, Install two straps for every leader, There are a few different leader straps so when buying leader strap make sure you choose the one you can live with.

Flashing: flashing can be rubber, copper or aluminum and as long you install them the way they are suppose to be install you will have many years with out any water leaking into your house, Many Roofing contractors try to complete the job to fast and the don't do a proper flashing installation and when the flashing fails to serve the way it's suppose serve, you are the one that ends with the new roof problem, That's why when it come's to roof flashing we always recommend that a roof flashing should be install by a qualify roofing company,

Roofing nails size: Roofing nail may sound simple but when it come's to roofing nail are very important, Why nails are important? Because without nails we wont have roof over our heads, when you reroof an existing roof you want to use 1-1/2 inche roofing nails,. and when you are installing a new roof over clean sheeting, You should use 1-1/4 nails and depending what type of shingles you are installing most of of the shingles will take five nail per sheet
